HCG Trigger Shot

Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (HCG) is a hormone that is typically produced in a pregnant woman’s placenta. HCG also stimulates the release of the egg during ovulation and the development of the egg. During the process of trying to conceive, a fertility specialist will take an ultrasound picture to obtain the size of your follicles after taking fertility medications such as Clomid, Femara or Injectables. If there are mature follicles present, you will receive an HCG trigger shot to induce ovulation. This injection is about 5,000 to 10,000 units per syringe that is injected into a muscle such as the hip or some people say their butt. After receiving this injection, ovulation should occur with in 24-36 hours.

HCG trigger shots contain the same hormone that is also produced during pregnancy. After fertlization it is made by the placenta, which nurishes the egg. Therefore the symptoms can mimic signs of pregnancy. This can drive you crazy during the two-week wait (2WW) after receiving the trigger shot and IUI such as myself. If one gets too far ahead of themselves and take a pregnancy test too early, you can get a false positive. The HCG levels are too high after the injection and it would be useless to test this soon. Our pregnancy test was confirmed via blood test by our doctor’s office.

The first thing that frustrated couples need to know is that the chances of conception are extremely high. The easiest way keep an eye on it is for the woman to record her basal (body) temperature each and every morning on a calendar or graph. Since her temperature will rise during ovulation, this simple technique will let the couple know when the best time is to try to get pregnant. 

Lastly, there is an old wives’ tale that tells couples not to have too much sex when they are trying to conceive. Well, as you might expect, this is one-hundred percent incorrect. In fact, studies confirm that couples can increase their chances of conception by more than two-hundred percent if they make love each day of the week leading up to ovulation.  This is the best way we know how to increase your chances of getting pregnant.

Though the numbers are not set in stone, we do know that best time for couples to try to conceive is within a week of ovulation. But because sperm cannot survive for more than a few days, even under optimal conditions, the closer to ovulation the better. What do we mean optimal conditions? Well, when a woman approaches ovulation her cervical fluid changes from being thick and sticky to smooth and slippery. This makes it much easier for the sperm to survive and to travel in. In this optimal environment, sperm can live for several days.

So, how does a woman know when she is ovulating? While you can’t exactly set your watch by it, ovulation ordinarily occurs on the 14^th day of the menstrual cycle. Of course, this can vary by a day or even two. But since the best time to conceive is on the day of ovulation, it is important to identify the signs and symptoms.

The most common sign of ovulation is an increase in vaginal secretions. As we mentioned earlier, these secretions will be slippery and smooth and will look rather like a raw egg white. After ovulation, when the chances of getting pregnant are slim, secretions will return to their regular, sticky state. 

Another important thing to know about ovulation and getting pregnant is that your basal body temperature will increase by a few degrees during ovulation. That is why women who are trying to conceive should take their temperature halfway through their menstrual cycle. By simply recording the temperature at the same time every morning on a graph, a woman will be able to determine her ovulation schedule each month. 

Again, it is important to note that none of these suggestions are likely to be one hundred percent effective, but they have been proven to increase the odds of conception. There are also over-the-counter ovulation kits. Much like pregnancy tests, they test the urine for an increase in hormones.

Lastly, when it comes to ovulation and getting pregnant, quantity is more important than quality. That’s right! If you are a couple that is trying to conceive you must have sex…a lot. Studies show that daily intercourse increases the odds of conception threefold, especially when intercourse is occurring during or before ovulation. Yes, we know…it’s a dirty job, but somebody’s got to do it!

When you are thinking how you can get pregnant fast, you should remember that pregnancy is not something you can force or really control. Sometines we need mother nature to help us along. Like most things in our lives, pregnancy is not something that we have total control over. If you are a strong woman who likes to be the one that is taking care of everyone else, then this might be hard for you to take. You can get pregnant when you have intercourse during your ovulation period and the mans sperm meets with the woman’s egg that is released. Most of the time you will only release one egg per month, but it is possible to release two eggs a month and this is how twins are born. You only have a certain window of oppotunity each month to get pregnant. Sometimes this window can only be a few days. This can be pretty scary for couples who need to know how to get pregnant fast.

If you can figure this out, then you can have sex on those certain days to greatly improve your chances to get pregnant fast. If you are not sure when you are ovulating, then you might be having intercourse on the days that you are not ovulating and then you will have to wait til next month to try again.

If you really are anxious to get pregnant fast, one thing you can do is have intercourse on every day of the month. Having sex every day when you are ovulating will ensure you will have the best chance for getting pregnant.
