PCOS Syndrome
Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), also known by the name Stein-Leventhal syndrome, is a hormonal deficiency that causes women to have a variety of symptoms.It is an endocrine disorder affecting more or less 5% of women. It comes about amongst all races and nationalities PCOS syndrome is a leading cause of infertility and is the most widespread hormonal disorder among women of reproductive age.
The symptoms of polycystic ovarian syndrome are obesity, anovulation which eventually will lead to irregular menstruation, acne, and excessive amounts or effects of androgenic or masculinizing hormones. The symptoms and severity of the syndrome vary from woman to woman. Causes are quite unknown except for insulin resistance, diabetes, and obesity whose causes are known and are strongly associated with PCOS syndrome.
Other common symptoms of PCOS are high blood pressure, high cholesterol levels, unusual hair growth and hair distribution, and also dandruff. Many of these symptoms can be absent to those women who have PCOS but they will always have irregularities in their menstruation or don’t have it at all.Women who don’t experience regular ovulation don’t produce egg cells each month and that often leads to irregular menstruation.
Although there’s no established fact of PCOS, women who suffer from it either have a mother or sister who has PCOS but still it’s not considered hereditary.Usually there are many small cysts found in the ovaries of women with PCOS, a reason for it to be called polycystic ovarian syndrome.There are comparable number of cysts found in women who don’t suffer from PCOS. Thus, the cysts are not the considered the major cause of this predicament.Most often there is a breakdown in the blood sugar level control or the insulin system for women who have PCOS; thus, it has been established by researchers that irregularities may be related to PCOS development. The ovaries of women with PCOS are also known to produce excessive amounts of male hormone call androgen.� This extreme production of male hormones may be an outcome of the irregularities the production of insulin.
