- To start with you’ll have to meet the requirements for the trials. For instance they may be looking for Asian women married to Canadian men shorter than themselves, who live in Alaska and breed Persian cats. Check who is permitted to participate before you get going on filling out forms and getting your hopes up! Also make sure with your doctor before you apply.
- What are the scientists attempting to achieve? Some studies test treatments, which could benefit you while others are merely attemping to gather information in which case you won’t benefit directly from the study.
- What research processes are they using? You may be given a placebo in which case you may not gain at all. A placebo is when they administer dummy pills rather than medicine with the testable chemical in them to make sure that it is themedicine that is helping, rather than your wishful thinking.
- Make sure you know what the costs are, if any. A few studies are fully financed so you might not need to pay anything more than your transport costs to and from the clinic. It all depends on that specific study, so ensure that you know the specifics up front.
- Are there any possible hazards? Both you and your partner should know precisely what the risks are, if any, and choose whether you are willing to take the gamble. You have no assurance that the treatments will work – they might, but then again, they may not. The choice is all yours!
Even if you might not benefit from a specific trial, your participation will have benefitted other infertile couples. When participating in infertility trials you ought to ensure that you have done your homework.
